What is Laser Hair Removal?

Unwanted facial and body hair is bothersome to many patients during the year, but is especially noticeable in the summer, when we trade in wool sweaters for beach wear. We offer laser hair removal, and can treat hair from most parts of the body, including the face, legs, arms, underarms, back, chest, nipples, and bikini lines.

Laser hair treatment is performed with our Cutera Xeo Yag laser. The skin is covered with a clear, cool, water-based ultrasound gel, which helps to protect the skin. The laser beam is aimed at the hair, and the pulse of laser emitted is controlled by a foot pedal. An internal cooling tip in the wand is held against the skin, which helps with patient comfort. Laser energy is pulsed over the hair, and travels down the hair shaft to reach the follicle, or base of the hair. The energy damages the follicle, and the damaged follicle then produces a lighter, finer hair. The existing hair “plumes,” which is a visible sign that the hair has responded to the laser, and will fall out over time. The “new” hair growth will be lighter and finer. It is retreated with laser in 8 week intervals, with hair being lighter and finer with each subsequent treatment. Hair grows in multiple phases, with many phases happening at once. Hair responds to laser according to its hair growth phase, so multiple treatments are necessary to adequately treat hair. Over the course of a couple of treatments, all of the hairs will have been treated in their optimum phase, and intervals of 8 weeks allows all of the hairs to be “treated equally over time.” Because laser energy is picked up by pigment within the hair, hair needs to have pigment in it for the laser energy to be absorbed and for successful treatment. Blonde, gray, white, and some red-tones of hair will not respond to laser hair treatment.
